Roma Mitchell is at the forefront of preparing our students for the needs of Australia’s future workforce, with a strong focus on education in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.
In 2014, we were named as a South Australian ‘STEM Focus School’ by the Department for Education and Child Development, and have also recently developed a Maths Specialism for our STEM focus to work with UniSA, the University of Adelaide and Melbourne’s RMIT University.
These grants fund practical, engaging and innovative projects for students in advanced technology studies and allow us to develop teaching and learning programs for students to build their skills, knowledge and understanding of higher level maths.
Our goal is that these programs encourage our students to continue STEM studies throughout their senior years, which will enable them easier entry into STEM tertiary courses and careers.
And despite a nationwide trend of student interest in science waning, our student numbers have in fact tripled in five traditional sciences subjects – Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Psychology – at year 11 level, as more and more of our students aim for university courses in STEM fields.
Our STEM programs engage students with an exciting curriculum and programs that put their studies into an everyday context, designed to inspire them to continue building their knowledge at a higher level.
